SIGTTO’s environmental policy is based on the Society’s unique role as the authoritative non-governmental organization promoting safe liquefied gas shipping and terminal operations.
SIGTTO recognizes that climate change presents both opportunities and challenges to its membership, such as
- Growing demand for low- and zero-carbon cargoes such as LNG, Hydrogen, Ammonia, LPG and CO₂;
- Increased focus on GHG emissions;
- The operational implications associated with evolving environmental regulations.
In response, SIGTTO will focus its environmental engagement on:
- Supporting members with the safe and practicable implementation of environmental regulations affecting liquefied gas carriers and terminals.
- Promoting and sharing best practices for managing environmental regulations for gas shipping and terminal operations.
- Collaborating with members and NGO’s to establish a position on technical input and support to regulatory and standard-setting bodies, including the IMO and classification societies, to ensure that new or revised environmental regulations are as safe, and effective as is reasonably practicable.
SIGTTO will not lead on decarbonization target setting or market-based measures.
Implementation of the policy should be pursued progressively and in alignment with SIGTTO’s available resources. Priority will be given to member-led contributions raised through the Environmental Advisory Group.
